Bath
Permanent
Full-time
£27,241–£30,986 / year
Closes 23 Oct 2026
We're looking for an enthusiastic and motivated technician to join our team. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is top 10 in the UK for our undergraduate courses and internationally renowned for our research output. You can be part of this success through the technical support you provide to our students and staff.
Based mainly in the Student Workshop, the post-holder will work as part of a team of multi-skilled technicians to provide technical support to both teaching and research in the Department. The team supports timetabled undergraduate teaching sessions, numerous student competition teams and a wide range of research activities.
The role requires use of conventional machine tools (milling machines, lathes) with the opportunity to progress onto CNC machine tools, where training would be provided. The post-holder will contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduates in the use of machine/hand tools and during final year individual research projects.
The post-holder will also be required to oversee student activities in the workshop and carry out inductions to ensure safe working at all times.
About you:
You will need to have substantial experience working with mechanical workshop machine tools, hand tools and an aptitude for practical work. We appreciate a wide range of skills in our team, so if you have experience of assembly, fitting, fabrication or welding this will be an advantage.
We want to hear from people who are flexible and adaptable in their approach to work. You will need to have a positive attitude and be willing to learn.
This is a full time (36.5 hours per week) role with the requirement to work on campus full time.
Benefits include:
- Generous annual leave allowance with an additional 5 discretionary days
- Generous employer contributory pension schemes
- Cycle to work scheme
- Electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme
- Staff discount at Team Bath gym
- Discounted postgraduate tuition and language courses
- Wide range of personal and professional development opportunities including apprenticeships and LinkedIn Learning
- Local discounts including free entry to the Holburne Museum in Bath
- A family-friendly workplace
- Relocation allowance
- Visa reimbursement and Interest-Free Loan to help with the cost of some immigration expenses
- Employee assistance services through Health Assured, including access to the Wisdom app
- Staff support groups and networks
- A network of Staff Wellbeing Champions
