We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Technical Instructor to join our Fine Art technical team and support students in developing ambitious, innovative and professionally realised creative work.
At the University of Brighton, our Fine Art students work across a diverse range of contemporary and traditional practices, exploring materials, processes and technologies to realise their ideas. As a Technical Instructor, you will play a vital role in creating an inspiring, supportive and safe environment where students can experiment, develop their skills and bring their creative projects to life.
Working as part of a collaborative team of technical specialists, you will provide expert support across our Fine Art studios and workshop facilities. You will help students and academic staff make the most of our specialist resources, offering technical instruction, practical guidance and creative problem-solving across a range of artistic disciplines. This role is available on a fixed term basis until 28/07/2028 on a part time contract (30 hours per week). This is available on a job share basis.
You will contribute to a vibrant learning environment through the delivery of workshops, demonstrations and inductions, enabling students to develop confidence in working with materials, equipment and processes whilst maintaining high standards of health and safety.
Key responsibilities:
- Delivering technical inductions, demonstrations and workshops across Fine Art facilities and specialist areas.
- Providing technical guidance and support to students and staff in the development of creative projects.
- Advising on materials, making processes, fabrication methods and appropriate production techniques.
- Supporting practical teaching activities, studio-based learning and interdisciplinary projects.
- Preparing and maintaining workshops, studios, equipment and technical resources for teaching and learning activities.
- Monitoring and maintaining specialist equipment, tools and machinery to ensure safe and effective operation.
- Managing stocks of materials and consumables and assisting with resource planning.
- Supporting the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, degree shows and public events.
- Promoting and maintaining high standards of health and safety, including the preparation of risk assessments, safe systems of work and associated documentation.
- Contributing to the development of facilities and technical practices that enhance the student experience.
About you:
The successful candidate will have substantial practical experience within Fine Art or a closely related creative discipline, together with a genuine enthusiasm for supporting learning and creative development. You should be confident in the use of standard workshop machinery – panel saws, radial arm saws, pillar drill etc. – and have a good knowledge of a range of mould making techniques and materials.
You will be a confident communicator who enjoys working with people and sharing knowledge. Whether supporting a student's first encounter with a studio or workshop process or helping realise a complex final-year project, you will be approachable, solution-focused and committed to enabling creative success.
You will also have excellent organisational skills and a strong understanding of workshop health and safety requirements, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming and supportive learning environment.
