Sign in Create an accountLoughborough University is seeking a Research Associate to join a project focused on geotechnical modelling for climate resilient earthworks. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research addressing the challenges posed by climate change to earthwork infrastructure such as embankments, cuttings, and levees.
The successful candidate will develop and apply advanced geotechnical numerical models to investigate the behaviour of earthworks under changing climatic conditions. The role involves working with hydro-mechanical coupled models, constitutive soil models, and finite element or similar numerical methods to simulate earthwork performance and failure mechanisms driven by climate-induced stressors such as prolonged rainfall, drought, and temperature fluctuations.
Key responsibilities include conducting high-quality research in geotechnical modelling, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences, collaborating with academic and industry partners, and contributing to the wider research group activities.
Candidates should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related discipline. A strong background in numerical modelling of geomaterials, familiarity with finite element software (e.g., ABAQUS, PLAXIS, CODE_BRIGHT, or similar), and knowledge of unsaturated soil mechanics and/or climate-earthwork interaction are essential. Experience with programming or scripting languages is desirable.
Loughborough University is committed to creating an inclusive environment that values diversity. We welcome applications from all candidates regardless of age, disability, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
