The University of Bath · Department of Mathematical Sciences
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Bath
Fixed-term
Full-time
£38,784–£46,049 / year
Closes 26 Nov 2026
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath welcomes applications for an EPSRC-funded Research Associate in Analysis to work with Dr Matthew Schrecker in nonlinear partial differential equations.
The successful candidate will work on research topics connected with singularity formation and stability in self-gravitating fluids as part of the EPSRC grant "Criticality in Newtonian Gravitational Collapse."
Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in mathematics, with a strong background in analysis and nonlinear PDEs. Expertise in areas related to fluid mechanics, nonlinear wave equations, or hyperbolic conservation laws is particularly welcome.
The successful candidate will join the Analysis Group at Bath, a leading research group consisting of 14 permanent academic staff, 4 postdocs and around 12 PhD students. There are weekly seminars during term-time and regular reading groups and graduate courses.
There may also be the opportunity (but not the requirement) to do a small amount of teaching as part of the role.
This is a fixed-term position for 24 months, to start on 1 September 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.
A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.
Benefits include: generous annual leave allowance with an additional 5 discretionary days; generous employer contributory pension schemes; cycle to work scheme; electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme; staff discount at Team Bath gym; discounted postgraduate tuition and language courses; LinkedIn Learning and apprenticeship opportunities; local discounts including free entry to the Holburne Museum in Bath; relocation allowance; visa reimbursement and interest-free loan to help with immigration expenses; employee assistance services through Health Assured including access to the Wisdom app; staff support groups, wellbeing champions, and a health-supporting working environment.
