Lecturer in Law

We are seeking a Lecturer in Law who is a qualified solicitor or barrister with substantial professional experience. Criminal practice experience is strongly preferred, reflecting the School's portfolio and professional focus; however, applications are welcomed from practitioners in other legal areas who can make a practice-informed contribution.

The postholder will teach and assess across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, lead modules, supervise research and contribute to curriculum development, quality assurance and course administration. They will translate professional experience into authentic learning through case studies, simulations, advocacy, professional skills and clinical or pro bono opportunities.

The role also involves supporting student recruitment, progression, employability and routes into the profession. The successful candidate will contribute to research, scholarship, knowledge exchange, public engagement, continuing professional development and income-generating activity. They will build relationships with practitioners, employers, criminal justice organisations and alumni while working collaboratively to enhance curriculum relevance, academic standards and the student experience.

About you:
We are seeking a qualified solicitor or barrister who combines substantial professional legal experience with the ability to become an engaging higher education lecturer. Current or recent criminal practice experience is particularly valued, including criminal litigation, advocacy, evidence, sentencing, professional conduct or criminal justice work. However, we also welcome practitioners from other legal specialisms who can demonstrate transferable expertise and contribute across our broader Law provision.

The successful candidate will translate contemporary practice into academically rigorous, authentic teaching and assessment, supporting students to develop professional knowledge, skills, confidence and employability. They will be inclusive, innovative and student-focused, with excellent advocacy, presentation and communication skills. They should work effectively both independently and collaboratively, exercise sound professional judgement and build strong external relationships.

Experience of professional legal training, SQE or Bar preparation, curriculum development, research, knowledge exchange, mentoring, clinical education or public engagement would be advantageous, alongside commitment to the University's values.
