The University of Bath is looking for a data analyst, proficient in Excel and Power BI. We want you to help us to understand our people data that describes our research culture and environment. We want you to use that data to help us understand what is really happening rather than what we think might be happening. And we want you to show us, with the data, how the research culture we are building can be evidenced.

This role sits in a unique place in the University of Bath. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Workforce Development in the HR department, you will have full access to all our people data. You will also be embedded in the virtual team that is iteratively developing the People, Culture and Environment statement for our REF 2029 submission. This is the primary focus of your time with us.

We know that we have weaknesses in our data and that we need to develop our ability to move from report generation to developing insights. The second part of your role will be to act as a subject matter expert, supporting your colleagues in the HR Management Information Team in both the development and delivery of the actions that will improve our data quality, and to acquire further confidence and expertise in the use of Power BI to create insights.

About Workforce Development at the University of Bath

Workforce Development sits within the wider HR Department and comprises specialist teams focused on People Consultancy, Reward, Academic Promotion and HR Management Information. We work collaboratively across priorities and projects, bringing together colleagues with different expertise to solve problems and deliver change.

Our work is guided by the University's Generous Leadership approach. We aim to create an environment where people can thrive, contribute and develop. This is reflected in three core qualities: Authentic – acting with purpose and building trust; Empathetic – showing genuine care, respect and consideration for others; Adaptive – responding positively to change and supporting flexible ways of working.

About You

We are looking for someone who is curious, analytical and motivated by using data to answer meaningful questions. You will be comfortable working with large and complex datasets, turning information into clear insights that support decision-making and continuous improvement.

You will bring:

- A degree-level qualification in a relevant discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Advanced Excel skills, including data manipulation, analysis and reporting.
- Experience of using Power BI (or similar business intelligence tools) to develop reports, dashboards and visualisations.
- Experience of analysing and interpreting data to identify trends, patterns and opportunities for improvement.
- The ability to present complex information in a clear and accessible way for a range of audiences.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to data quality and accuracy.
- Experience of working with multiple data sources and managing large datasets.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outputs to agreed timescales.
- A commitment to collaborative working and continuous learning.

This role would suit candidates from a variety of professional backgrounds, including people analytics, business intelligence, management information, research analytics or data analysis. If your experience does not align perfectly with every requirement but you believe you have the skills and potential to succeed, we would encourage you to apply.

Further Information

This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term basis with an expected end date of 31/07/2029.

What we can offer you:
